This program consists in improving eating and nutrition for children aged 2-5 years who attend the school cafeteria at Children's Centers Creative Seeds and El Eden. The children come from families displaced by violence and through this nutritional program we seek to promote greater integration and improve harmony within the community.
This sustained nutrition approach or ‘Full Tummies’ consists of providing the children with supplementing their lunch with additional food from Monday through Friday. This input of 400 to 460 kilocalories covers the 28 to 30 % of their daily caloric requirements, an adequate percentage to ensure good nutrition.
The approach of sustained nutrition during vacation times also minimizes the potential impact of food and nutrition insecurity that children experienced by children living in these communities.
The program has obtained very positive results, allowing the children benefiting from this initiative to maintain the appropriate weight/height indicators that are needed for normal physical and cognitive development.
